1.5.1 post-synthesis funCtionalization method
This is the reason why this functionalization method is also known as grafting.
There are a great number of different organic groups (Figure 1.25) that can be grafted to the surface of the mesopores through this functionalization method by the variation of the organic residue R on the precursors.
The main advantage of this functionalization method, apart from the previously mentioned organic variability, is that the mesostructure of the starting material is normally retained, although there might be a reduction in the porosity due to the presence of the organic moiety.
This is an alternative functionalization method of ordered mesoporous silica that is based on the co-condensation, during the synthetic process, of the silica precursors together
